After the Christmas and New Year food and tipple indulgences, we were feeling anything but ready to slip on our new gym gear and jump into a pilates class on January 1st. We sent an SOS to beauty editor, certified health coach and author Eat Pretty Jolene Hart. Her nutrition-for-beauty approach to eating first caught our eye quite sine time ago, and we could think of no one better to give our self-care routine a kickstart in 2016. Here, Jolene shares four energising smoothies (three exclusively for us), to help us greet the New Year with our best face forward.
Golden Coconut Smoothie
serves 2
The delicate, almost floral, fragrance of fresh turmeric root makes this creamy smoothie a treat for the palate, while its healthy fats, selenium-rich oats and anti-inflammatory benefits nourish skin from the inside out.
What you’ll need
- 3” fresh turmeric root
- 2 cups unsweetened coconut milk
- 1 pitted date
- ¼ cup gluten free oats
How it’s made
- Scrub the turmeric and remove any inedible spots from its peel.
- Combine all ingredients in a high-powered blender and process until smooth. Serve immediately.
Ginger Beet Berry Smoothie
serves 2
Anti-inflammatory ginger and energizing beets and chia make a powerfully beautifying and detoxifying combo. The addition of raspberries enhances this smoothie with collagen-boosting vitamin C, hair-building B vitamins and skin elasticity-boosting anthocyanins.
What you’ll need
- 1 medium beetroot
- 2” knob of fresh ginger root
- 2 cups filtered water
- 1 pint (6 oz) organic raspberries
- 1 tbsp chia seeds
How it’s made
- Scrub the beet and ginger, remove tough or damaged areas from their outsides, and chop them into chunks (no need to peel completely).
- Combine all ingredients in a high-powered blender and process until smooth. Serve immediately.
Sun Protective Cherry Chocolate Smoothie
serves 2
This sweet smoothie is packed with top energy foods like cacao and hemp, along with a phytonutrient boost from cherries and cacao that increases the skin’s natural UV defense.
What you’ll need
- 2 cups unsweetened non-dairy milk
- 2 cups pitted organic sweet cherries (fresh or frozen)
- 2/3 cup gluten free oats
- 2 tbsp shelled hemp seeds
- 2 tbsp raw cacao powder
- few drops almond extract (optional)
- A handful of ice cubes
How it’s made
- Combine all ingredients in a high-powered blender and process until smooth. Serve immediately.
Lemony Beauty Smoothie, from Eat Pretty
serves 2-4
Switch up this smoothie throughout the year by substituting fresh, seasonal greens. Throw in some basil or mint in the summer, or kale in the fall. I like to add a small amount of organic lemon peel for flavour and extra bioflavonoids.
What you’ll need
- 2 cups water
- 2 large handfuls of spinach leaves
- 1 medium handful of dandelion greens or watercress
- 1 medium handful of parsley, thick stems removed
- 1/2 ripe avocado
- 1 organic lemon, peeled
- 1/2 frozen banana (use the whole banana if your prefer more sweetness)
How it’s made
- In a high-powered blender, combine the water, spinach, dandelion greens (or watercress), and parsley and blend to a coarse puree.
- Add the avocado, lemon (and some strips of the peel if you like), and banana. Blend on high until smooth and creamy. Serve immediately.
More from Jolene, right this way.
